The Semanggi district, its name deriving from the intricately designed roads and bridges forming the shape of a four-leaved clover or semanggi leaf, is the perfect example of how the human mind shapes things with their perceptions.

For those who take pride in the Indonesian development history, the Semanggi Bridge built in 1964 with Ir Sutami as its designer, is a milestone of Indonesia’s development and advancement towards being a metropolitan city, yet for those who would like to take a bleaker look at Indonesia’s history will forever see the site as the background for the tragedy of 1998, where four students were murdered during a massive protest against the New Order.

For those who bury their heads in papers and calculation, this is their battle ground, for the Semanggi District is part of the golden triangle area of Indonesia’s business (the area formed by linking Sudirman, Thamrin and Kuningan). The SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District) is also a famed name in this world of perception the SCBD , aside from being a vast business center, also offers luxurious apartments inside.

And for those simply looking for pleasure, the Semanggi district is a nice place to shop or hang out because it has the Plaza Semanggi, a fun shopping-and dining center containing some of the hippest hangout places for youngsters such as the So Ho cafe which doubles as a record shop or the New York Style Pizza Place, Avenue A. Plaza Semanggi also has a cinema and on some days live music is played in their cafe walk. A personal favourite of mine, there’s always an adventure of entering the small shops or boutiques of the Plaza and burrowing inside them for random cute things.
