New Samsung Laser Printer Multifunction - Samsung Electronics took the No. 1 position in the A4 laser multifunction printer (MFP) market globally in the third quarter of 2009, a performance driven by its strategic focus and innovative approach to this fast-growing market segment.

According to figures from market research firm IDC, Samsung Electronics captured 27.3 percent of the global market for A4 sized laser multifunction printers, topping the industry for the second consecutive quarter.

In A4 monochrome laser MFPs, Samsung rose above the global competition with a 26.5 percent market share. On a geographical basis, Samsung was the market leader in every region with the exception of North America, obtaining a 29.3 percent market share in Europe, 39.9 percent in CIS, 20.1 percent in China, 34.1 percent in Southeast Asia, 34.6 percent in Latin America and 40.6 percent in the Middle East and Africa.

For A4 color laser MFPs, Samsung took the lead in Europe and Southeast Asia with 36 percent and 32.6 percent, respectively. Its global market share rose to 31.3 percent, closing the gap on the market leader.

Boosted by its leadership in laser MFPs, Samsung Electronics’ market share based on unit sales across all A4 laser printers/MFPs markets rose from 15.3 percent in the third quarter of 2008 to 20.5 percent in the same period this year.

Samsung’s digital printing business has put a strategic focus on laser machines, especially MFPs, due to the segment’s strong growth potential. The IDC forecasts year-on-year growth in the laser MFP market of 18.8 percent in 2010 and expects the market will continue to grow by around 12 percent annually through 2013. This compares to projections for laser printers overall of 4.7 percent and inkjet printers of 3.3 percent.

Moving away from the conventional idea that laser printers are exclusively for business-use, Samsung has revolutionized laser printers as personal devices for the home. As an innovator in the market, Samsung has produced more compact printers with designs that defy the industry norm, including models with a high-gloss black finish, thus bringing a more personalized and stylish product to the market.

Samsung pursues a balanced development strategy for both its consumer and business printers. The market for personal laser printers is expected to enter a recovery in 2010 after declining in 2009. Samsung will introduce a wide range of pioneering personal laser products early next year and will fulfill its commitment to develop high-speed printers, while securing channels and solutions partners for the business market.
