Teachers and the Challenge of Quality Education

Teachers and the Challenge of Quality Education(Media Indonesia: 16/06/08). The presence and role of teachers in our society has long been regarded by our literary culture as one worth admiring and emulating. Unfortunately, the reality is that there isn’t as much appreciation for the profession as our literary culture suggests. Although teaching is often called a noble profession, in reality, it is one of the least sought professions by jobseekers who prefer to become doctors, engineers, accountants, lawyers, artists, presenters, reporters instead.

Even the legislative product which was specifically developed to give appreciation to the teaching profession and its role in advancing the nation was only released and implemented with the creation of Law No.14 of 2005. It is of no surprise, then, that the teaching profession appears as uninteresting as table salt in the “buffet of professions” with many enticing “dishes” to choose from.

Yet, no one would argue the fact that quality education is inseparable from quality teaching. Teachers are the primary and determining factor in new successful education policies, innovative initiatives, or education quality improvement initiatives, and the democratization of education (Villega-Reimer, 2004). Thus, the role of teachers is a pre-requisite for quality education (Cadwel, 1991). What kind of model and teacher conduct can serve as a fundamental requirement for a long-term education projection? Creemers (1994) implicitly place teacher conduct within the context of learning processes as a determinant for the successful education of students.

The term “CAI”, Computer Aided Instruction, is used in the broadest sense in this document. CAI will refer to any use of computers that interacts with students in any way in the educational process.
(1) CAI allows students to practice procedures as long as required to achieve defined competencies. This helps level the ground where students bring a wide range of native skills and educational backgrounds to a classroom. Students with a strong desire to learn electronics can succeed even with weak backgrounds when given the right learning tools and a supportive environment.
(2) Immediate feedback provided by CAI saves time and prevents learning the “wrong” concepts. In traditional training, students do substantial amounts of homework. Unfortunately, a student can do a number of problems entirely wrong on a homework assignment. The student would not be aware of his misconceptions until the teacher grades his homework and returns the paper to the student. Now, the student must not only learn the proper procedures but “unlearn” the wrong procedures as well.
(3) With CAI, students can determine their own weaknesses and concentrate efforts on overcoming those weaknesses before moving on more advanced concepts. All too often, students continue work on more advanced concepts while still holding misconceptions about the fundamentals of a topic. This leads to irritation and the feeling that electrical concepts are more complex than they are in reality. How many electronics technology students give up and drop out simply because the training system failed to diagnose misconceptions quickly?
